B takes part in international colloquium 'As Found'
From 5 to 7 September 2023 the Flanders Architecture Institute and Hasselt University organised the international colloquium As Found: Experiments in Preservation. The colloquium addressed designers, researchers and students with a focus on concepts and practices that intervene in the existing built environment, or 'as found architecture'.
On Thursday 7 September, we participated in the colloquium with our presentation The Foundlings of B. Joint Ventures for Quasi-Heritage Objects. In it, we looked back at some key adaptive reuse projects since the early days of B-architecten; we are celebrating our 25th anniversary this year. But we also looked into the future in light of the merger last year with B-Juxta – the branch of B dedicated to restoration and renovation.
We sketched the story of how caring for buildings in various states of abandonment or vulnerability - architectural foundlings - leads to finding the architectural project and its image. Caring for the architecture as found and reinventing it, depends on external collaboration and consultation of needs and desires of its users. Therefore our presentation was also very much an acknowledgement of all the joint ventures of B.
