Retrofit of the historical coach house and orangery on the site of the Catholic Education Ghent South site Nieuwenbosch into a 40-room boarding school with a new extension.
The 'Nieuwenbosch' site is a former Cistercian convent, founded in the 17th century, which since the 19th century has functioned as a free city school with boarding school for nursery, primary and secondary education. The redevelopment of the former coach house and orangery corresponds to the current educational function. The requested programme – a boarding school with 40 rooms – is divided over the existing building and new extension.
After a thorough volume survey and consultation with the relevant urban planning and historical preservation departments, the new volume was designed and positioned in a qualitative and conscious manner in relation to its surroundings. For the design, contemporary standards were taken into account and the articulation of the coach house was fully respected. The architectural elaboration of the new building is sober in design and sustainable in its choice of materials.
